a social focus

Gedurende drie jaar bezochten Renée Lorie en Erien Withouck wekelijks het sociale woonblok aan het plein Charles Jordans in Sint-Gillis in Brussel. Dat deden ze telkens zes weken lang. Elk jaar werkten ze rond een ander voedingsritueel en vertaalden die in een artistieke, fotografische reeks: in Soupah! (2022) ging het over soep, in Cup of tea? (2023) over koffie- en theerituelen en in Fruit me! (2024) waren fruit en zomersmoothies onderwerp. Focus waren babbels, samen eten en drinken en gedeelde menselijke connectie via fotografie. «Wat is jouw favoriete soep? Hoe drink je graag je koffie of heb je liever thee? Welk fruit vind je lekker?» waren vragen tot gesprek.

Elk luik werd afgesloten met een kleinschalige tentoonstelling en er verscheen telkens een gratis fotomagazine: een geïllustreerd «receptenboek» met foto's, recepten in getranscribeerde spreektaal vermengd met tekeningen van de spelende kinderen uit de buurt. Het project werd ontwikkeld in samenwerking met de gemeente Sint-Gillis, het kunstenfestival Park Poétik en de sociale huisvestingsmaatschappij Foyer du Sud.

Van 15 mei tot 13 september 2026, met een sluiting tussen 20 juli en 17 augustus, wordt een overzichtstentoonstelling gepresenteerd van de triptiek in cultureel centrum Jacques Franck. De drie magazines krijgen opnieuw vorm in een publicatie in eigen beheer. Via «pay what you can» zamelen we er geld mee in dat we rechtstreeks zullen doneren aan Restaurant du Cœur, het sociale restaurant nabij het sociale woningcomplex aan Charles Jordens. Om zo langdurig bij te dragen aan gezonde voeding voor het sociale woonblok!

We organiseren hier een verkoop van zes fine art prints in een oplage van tien stuks en negentien sierborden met quotes uit de conversaties om zo een kwaliteitsvolle presentatie van in Jacques Franck te brengen.

For three years, Renée Lorie and Erien Withouck visited the social housing block on Place Charles Jordans in Saint-Gilles, Brussels, on a weekly basis. Each time, they worked there for six consecutive weeks. Every year, they focused on a different food ritual, translating it into an artistic photographic series: Soupah! (2022) revolved around soup; Cup of tea? (2023) explored coffee and tea rituals; and Fruit me! (2024) centred on fruit and summer smoothies. The focus was on conversations, sharing food and drinks, and human connection through photography. «What is your favourite soup? How do you like your coffee, or do you prefer tea? Which fruit do you like eating?» were opening lines to spark dialogue.

Each chapter concluded with a small-scale exhibition and the publication of a free photo magazine: an illustrated «recipe book» featuring photographs, recipes transcribed in spoken language, and drawings by children from the neighbourhood. The project was developed in collaboration with the municipality of Saint-Gilles, the arts festival Park Poétik, and the social housing company Foyer du Sud.

From 15 May to 13 September 2026, with a closure between 20 July and 17 August, a retrospective exhibition of this triptych will be presented at the Jacques Franck cultural centre. The three magazines will be redesigned and republished as a self-published edition. Through a «pay what you can» system, we will raise funds that will be donated directly to Restaurant du Cœur, the social restaurant near the social housing complex on Place Charles Jordans, thereby contributing in a sustainable way to healthy food access for the residents. 

We are organising a sale of six fine art prints in an edition of ten and nineteen decorative plates featuring quotes from the conversations, in order to create a high-quality presentation at the Jacques Franck cultural centre.
